Sleep apnea (which could occur at any age) was a primary theme of this week’s Golden Bachelorette episode.
That, along with a re-creation of the prom and tearful bonding over partners’ deaths, was part of the two-hour reality TV phenom.
My two cents:
Too much focus is being placed on aches, pains, and health issues. Although I think we folks over 50 need to be honest about our failing body parts at times, constant kvetching about them feeds into ageist stereotypes.
I love nostalgia as much as the next woman, but the return to prom and childlike pleasures at Disneyland are overplayed. I’ve long been a fan of what I call rear-view-therapy but let’s balance it with plans for our futures.
Divorce is rarely talked about. It’s skimmed over in conversations between the contestants, but given that “grey divorce” is on the upswing, I’d love to see it discussed as much as the death of a spouse. What does “We grew apart” actually mean?
And because I love to see how the media handles crisis management, I’m eager to see how the network ultimately handles Gil’s restraining order drama. Was it leaked to boost ratings and create some off-screen buzz? We will never know. But if it raises awareness of emotional and physical abuse in relationships (even after age 60), that’ll be a good thing.
On the bright side, I was thrilled to see some spit-swapping finally happening. Even if you hate reality TV, the show is a great place to pick up sensual kissing techniques.
Until next week….
